Deleting a file, photo, movie or any form of other digital data from the hard drives’ memory does not permanently remove it. In fact, deleting anything from a smartphone, PC Tablet, laptop, desktop, server, data storage array or external hard drive device only deletes the file path. This means that even in the hands of a novice, deleted information is still easily recoverable. We all know why it’s so important to permanently remove data from computing devices before they are disposed of but what’s the best way to do it? To answer that question, please find below the best methods to digital data destruction and many of the other questions we get asked on a regular basis:
You have the power to make a difference, change the way things are done and create a better, greener future for the IT industry.
Large-scale data centers will tend to decommission between 200 and 400 hard drives at a time. That might seem like a lot of hard drives but most data storage servers supporting SAS, SATA, NVMe; HDDs, and SSDs carry up to 32 LFF and 60 SFF drives per machine. In fact, 400 drives are a relatively small quantity compared to the entire number of hard drives in operation. As a result of these volumes, a data center will typically call in our ITAD team to bulk shred the drives at their location. This is called ‘onsite hard drive shredding’. However, if a business has a smaller quantity of hard drives, it may well go for the cheaper disposal route by having them shredded at our ITAD facility. Removing and shredding hard drives at our facility is called ‘offsite hard drive shredding’.

Hard drive wiping is a term commonly used to explain a process of permanently purging data so it can never be recovered. A hard drive wipe is simply a process of copying over anything on the hard drive with junk data. The more times a hard drive is copied over the harder it becomes to recover the original data. Copying over data is typically called a pass. The standard DoD hard drive wipe is 3 passes; however, some companies will demand as many as 7 passes per drive. Multi-pass hard drive overwrites are considered to be one of the securest and cleanest methods of permanently wiping away digital data. This is because it works on SSD as well as HDD memory systems. Put simply, it means you can wipe the memory of a smartphone, Android Pad, iPad, laptop computer, desktop PC, server and storage server without destroying the device and leaving possible fragments of data.

Memory on a hard disk drive or data tape is stored magnetically using sequencies of binary polarizations. Degaussing, is a process by which a magnetic storage device (e.g.: HDD or tape) is exposed to an extremely powerful electromagnetic field. The field resets the binary sequencies by polarizing it to all zeros and then to all ones. This utterly obliterates the memory, destroying everything. There are 3 downsides to degaussing, they are: 1. it doesn’t work on CD or DVD’s as their data is laser etched. 2. A Solid-State Drive (SSD) will not be affected by a magnetic field this is because SSD stores data as electrons in 7 stage charge trap flash systems and not magnetically. 3. Most HDDs are protected from EMF by its casing and may not always get degaussed on its first pass.

If you want to keep your hard drive the best way to permanently erase data, files and folders is to overwrite them. Overwriting is more commonly known as data wiping. There are many software tools available that can wipe everything from a single file to an entire hard drive. That said if you have 400 hard drives to wipe it’s going to take you a lot of time. You are better off using our ITAD data destruction service, we use specialized hard drive wiping machines that can permanently erase data from thousands of hard drives in hours. If you don’t want to keep your hard drive the best way to permanently erase data, files and folders is to have the hard drive shredded into tiny flakes. Hard drive shredding is a more expensive service as the shredders require regular maintenance.

If you are just looking to delete files, videos, pictures and documents but want to keep using the phone there are plenty of software tools available that will wipe them from the phone’s memory. However, if you are decommissioning hundreds of company smartphones then you are faced with two choices: 1. You can shred the entire phone or 2. You can individually wipe the phones memory. Obviously, the second option is more time consuming but it means the phones can go on to be reused which is one of the best forms of recycling. If you do shred your company smartphones, they can still be recycled though the flakes of materials will need a specialist recycler to separate out all the metals, glass and plastics.
Our ITAD ECO Plus solution can help you to securely dispose of all company IT assets, that includes everything from an office computer network to your business smartphones. If you need help or are interested in becoming a client, please email our ITAD team: Support@ITAD-Company.com.
In the USA there are a multitude of very complex data protection acts, regulations and legislations that if ignored can result in hefty fines for your business and even imprisonment for you. That’s why it is so incredibly important to not just delete files, folders and data from your corporate or medical laptops but to have the hard drive removed and wiped to at least the standards set by the U.S. Department of Defense.
Our ITAD company is highly experienced in managing the data destruction for decommissioned corporate laptops and medical laptop computers. Our laptop data destruction solution is capable of removing the hard drives and digitally wiping thousands of retired laptops in days. If you are planning on decommissioning your laptops please email: Support@ITAD-Company.com.
You don’t always have too… If you are decommissioning hundreds of desktop computers, servers and laptops that have never held any PII or sensitive data then technically you don’t need to destroy their hard drives. With that said, if you want to wipe the drives because you are worried about the software, files and data stored on them then the easiest and fastest way is to have your ITAD company do it for you. Removing the hard drives from 400 desktop PCs (for example) is a massive undertaking, especially for a few IT managers. Thankfully, our ITAD company employs a large team of ITAD engineers that can get to work and remove, wipe and recycle those drives in a fraction of the time.

If you are upgrading / refreshing a data center and have earmarked storage servers and storage arrays for replacement then it’s extremely likely you will want to sanitize their hard drives before disposing of them. Data centers have such a high volume of DAS, NAS and SAN storage systems in play that hard drive data destruction can be a massive undertaking. Most data centers choose to permanently delete data from their servers and storage arrays by having their hard drives shredded, however there are other options. It is possible to have the drives wiped so they can be reused or even sold along with the data storage system they came from.
Our ITAD team can provide onsite and offsite hard drive shredding, but we can also provide data storage hard drive wiping and diagnostics. This service allows us to see which drives are failing and which are worth saving. For help with decommissioning your data centers servers and data storage systems please email: Support@ITAD-Company.com
The cheapest form of data destruction is degaussing, followed by wiping and the most expensive form of data destruction is onsite HDD shredding. It is cheaper to shred hard drives at our ITAD facility. This is because we are collecting decommissioned servers, desktops and laptops with the drives still in them and don’t need to send out a separate data destruction truck. The cost of wiping and shredding can be as low as a few dollars or even free in some cases. It is impossible to specify prices without knowing how many drives the ITAD team are sterilizing. For example, it’s hardly worth sending out a hard drive shredding truck if you just have one hard drive to shred.
